  • Thank you, Dwain, for posting this.

There may be a car in your train that restricts the speed? Why?

Is a coal train incapable of reaching track speed, or is speed limited to reduce stress?

    Thank you.

  • @robertgift well, there are many restrictions,,, tracks, cars, ect, loaded coal trains are about the heaviest trains on the railroad,,, remember there is only one brake shoe per each traincar wheel, not that much stopping power so coal train are really hard to stop and bad for tracks, so much weight bouncing up and down, other types of unit trains such as grain, cement, ect also very heavy and hard on tracks , the heavier the train, the more restrictiions on that particular train.....

  • nice..how fast was it going??

  • @MyDavid1960 -- the max authorized speed at that time was 70 , unless you had a car that was restricted or a loaded coal train, or exceeded the ton per brake or track speed restrictions,, rules rules rules,,,, lots of rules but all designed for safety,,, but I have been 90 a time or two, but not for long,,,

  • When I was about 6 or 7 an SP main ran right through my fathers backyard!!! I would go out everyday and watch these guys switch in my backyard, literally! I got real familiar with the crews and eventually was invited to come up in the cab of a SW1500. The engineer asked me if I "wanted to drive" I said "yup"! I also used to get on the cars with the groundmen while they were working. They would explain to me what they were doing and everything!!! Now 26 yrs later, I'm doing what they were doing!

  • since when is the sufferin' pacific considered a high speed road? :)

  • Very Cool Video!!! SP forever!!!! thanks for posting!!!!

  • actually, one of the first trains on this video is the MBSM which stands for the Memphis Blue Streak Special,,,, if my memory is correct,,, a auto parts special train out of Memphis and bound for the Californis auto assembly plants. hot freight and everyone got out of its way,,,,,

  • Is the train in this video the Blue Streak?

  • @sexyfuchsi: Yes, with a 10 car passenger train where half the cars are powered vs a 60-100 car freight train......

  • ICE 3 = 300 kmh / 183 mph

    That is Highspeed :D

  • High speed? Ô.Ô

  • Love the graylight on top of the first SP loco. :D
