Munich, GERMANY - 1997/1998 Champions Series Final, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Tanja Szewczenko of Germany skated the performance of a lifetime here in front of her home crowd. She would place 2nd in the Free Skate and ended moving up from 3rd to 2nd Place overall.
Tara Lapinksi may have won the Olympics but in the 1997/1998 year, this performance from Tanja and Laetitia Hubert's freeskate at Trophee Lalique (where she beat Lapinski) stand out in my mind as two of the most unexpected and COMPLETELY AWESOME skating moments for not just both skaters but for figure skating at large. It is moments like these that I love this sport!

One of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite, as well.
There was just so much going on with Tanja leading up to and during this competition. The whole 2 seasons prior, the not knowing if she'd be able to compete here, the getting through the short and then thinking she'd have to withdraw (as they reference), and then this happens. I was active on the skating boards back then, but I had no idea what the outcome of this competition was prior to its broadcast. What an amazing moment.
