Vila Real, on the banks of the Rio Guadiana, was founded in 1774 by the Marquês de Pombal and built to the latest town planning ideas - on a grid system. It was completed in less than 2 years! May 13th is 'Day of the City' when the parade takes place. It showed 'scenes' from the 18th,19th and 20th centuries, starting with the Marquês de Pombal in his carriage and finishing with the Carnation Revolution of 1974 which ended 50 years of dictatorship in Portugal.
