Natalie DESSAY - "Cleopatra" Airs d'opéra extraits de Giulio Cesare de Haendel
Le Concert d'Astrée / Emmanuelle HAÏM
Parution: 17 janvier 2011

  • Just sublime and incredible musicianship.

  • @Mintcubes That's halfway through "Piangero"

  • What was she singing starting @ 8:00?

  • @primohomme Its depressing to hear her after her two vocal nodule surgeries =/

  • @Davidmy

Well, for someone who once had Ab6 to have a strained high C is very strange, don't you think? She is not that old.

  • @primohomme

I think she sounds pretty good after having several vocal surgeries. Her middle voice has improved tremendously since her younger days. As for the high notes, what do you expect? She IS ten years older and relatively close to 50. She has to work with an aging mechanism that isn't what it used to be. I think she should be congratulated for still being able to make the beautiful sounds she's making, and not critiqued for something she can't control (aging).

  • Gyönyörű hang!!! Csodálatosan énekli ezt az áriát (is)! Igazán átható és felemelő!...

  • @primohomme

Agreed. I think this recording doesn't do justice to her or to her voice. It sounds strange in more ways than one. There is a great difference in quality with her live performances and this video. Sounds like there's some great depth missing from this sound. The voice overall is rather thin and powerless. Almost like shes holding back for something. Too bad. I really like Händel as well as Dessay. Put it anyway you like: Im just a live music man to the heart.

Well, I'm talking specifically of this studio album, I think the tessitura in Handel (as well as the Italian bel canto repertoire) exposes the hollowness of her middle voice, and the notes above high C sound quite rough compared to for example her Morgana 10 years ago.

  • @primohomme

I do agree with your comments on the recording but her stage sound is still absurdingly good and flawless. You say that her prime has gone but in my opinion her prime is right now when shes more mature and focused on the music. Her high register isn't what it used to be but there's more to singing than perfect high notes and what she lacks in there, she perfectly makes up in pure control and refined sound.
