In June of 2009, United Steelworkers Local 8740 member Tyler Hammerstedt wrote lyrics and music for a folksong entitled Gomez will Bring Them Home. The song honours the memory of 65 Mexican coal miners killed in an explosion at the Pasta de Conchos mine in February of 2006. Its title and refrain, Gomez Will Bring Them Home pays tribute to the ongoing struggle of Napoleon Gomez, leader of the Mexican Mineworkers Union, who lives in exile in Canada today, and his quest to recover the bodies of 63 miners still entombed in the mine. Fighting political persecution by the Mexican government and Grupo Mexico, owner of the mine, Gomez and his wife Oralia seek a safe return to their homeland where Gomez demands a full investigation of the explosion he termed industrial homicide before being illegally removed from office by the Mexican government. Images are from the documentary film Los Caidos by producer Rudy Joffrey and the International Metalworkers Federation video An Injury to One.
