Some recent statements by Pakistani and Indian officials show that the lack of trust between Pakistan and India continues even after last month's Foreign Secretary level talks. But some analysts in Washington are optimistic that the situation will improve. Stephen Cohen, Foreign Policy expert at the Brookings Institution, says that if the civil societies in both countries continue their efforts to improve relations, the situation can get better. Malou Innocent, Foreign Policy analyst at the CATO Institute is of the view that the United States can play an important role in bringing the two countries close. But she warns that the United States should not be seen to be forcing them to talk to each other.
