A teletypewriter might be still cool, if you connected it up to a cell phone interface, your cell phone was left plugged in and on, and all your SMS messages were dumped out to the teletypewriter. If not a cellphone, then a low powered thin client running an linux text line IM client (not as cool, but way easier to do -- just log in with the the teletype writer to your linux box on the command line, and run the command line IM client and leave it all on :-/).

Better yet, bet a barix stream client box to recieve rtty and build a circuit that translates it and makes the teletype work. Much simpler.
