"Feels like -4F/-20C," said the National Weather Service. "Feels like a good day to make split pea soup," said I. The office never smelled so good as it slowly bubbled over two-and-a-half hours.
What's in it: Dried split peas, water, caramelized onions, carrots (added to the pot 25 minutes before serving), celery (added 40 minutes before serving), smoked ham leftover from Christmas dinner, marjoram, salt, lots of freshly-ground pepper, and a splash of (natural) hickory liquid smoke for an extra kick.
