I discuss the idea that if a woman decides to wear revealing clothing, that she 'deserves' and was 'asking for' whatever negative attention or assault she receives.

  • Are you asking for it, and are you bringing it upon yourself are two entirely different questions that are often, and in my opinion erroneously, combined. If I walk through a dangerous neighborhood wearing expensive clothing at 2am am I asking to be robbed? Of course not, but the likelihood I will be is far greater than if I was walking through that neighborhood at 1pm in jeans, and a t-shirt.

  • @YY4Me133-People who blame rape victims ignore the fact that infants and the elderly are also rape victims

Those facts don't preclude a rapist from choosing a victim based on their clothing, behavior, or location. Obviously no one is asking for, or responsible for being raped, but precautions can be taken to somewhat reduce the risk. No one deserves to be killed by a tornado, but living in tornado alley increases your risk, even though tornado's can happen elsewhere.

  • Reality time. Some men are animals. Some women are sluts with no self respect. The rest of us must take into consideration our behaviour whenever we might encounter them. It's a matter of common sense and self preservation. Would you walk naked through the back streets of Melbourne late on a Friday night? Stupid women don't deserved to be raped, but stupid behaviour deserves the utmost ridicule.

  • By very definition, nobody ever asks to get raped.

Rape is not about sex but about power and control, that's why some rapists rape old grannies and little babies.

The most common perpetrators of rape are current/ex partners and the most common place of rape is in the victims own home (more likely wearing pyjamas than 'slut' attire) therefore what they dress like has nothing to do with it - after all, clothes don't ever turn normal men into rapists.

  • that's a very unscientific approach to the problem at hand. i like that women and men can get along with whatever clothes they wish to wear. the reality is that women/men that are raped will be pretty much traumatized. some woman/men have real disrespect for others liberties, life and will. the offenders belong in jail and the victim is not to blame BUT the person has to be informed that certain actions are more likely to bring certain reactions than others. first data, then conclusions

In fact if someone was a stand out by dressing seductively they would have many eyes on them. And be far safer than someone know one was looking at or paying any attention to.

yeah, they dont, unless they think they are in a position to get away with it. The number that occur in the open is a minute percentage. It also only occurs where situations or circumstances permit. If the rapist perceives a possible protector for the victim or threat by raping, they wont do it. Rape is about control, losing it to a bystander or third party defeats and reverses the buzz. Once again it would not be the clothes that chooses the victim, but the opportunity.

  • @fantasy0coach

That's a ridiculous, and demonstrably false assertion. If vulnerability were the SOLE consideration no one would ever be raped in bars, or on public streets in broad daylight in front of witnesses.

  • @TheNakedAtheist I don't think anyone on this planet blames rape solely on the clothing choice of the victim.. but you are right, it's about being precautious.
