This was the first No. 1 Hit for the Beach Boys (their first Top 40 Hit was in 1962: Surfin Safari). The Group is actually playing the music and signing (no Dick Clark dubovers). Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote most of the music and lyrics for all these earlier Hits (on the car cuts such as 409 and Shutdown they got some help on the lyrics).
