NWP In Person: Linda Christensen

Meet Linda Christensen, director of the Oregon Writing Project at Lewis and Clark College and author of the newly published Teaching for Joy and Justice: Re-imagining the Language Arts Classroom, the much-anticipated sequel to Christensen's bestselling Reading, Writing, and Rising Up: Teaching About Social Justice and the Power of the Written Word.

Teaching for Joy and Justice: Re-imagining the Language Arts Classroom has been called a must-have resource text for twenty-first century educators who teach high school English or Language Arts because of Christensen's belief that teachers and their students must find joy in the classroom so that they can define and possess justice in their lives.

Great point about history not being inevitable, that there were choice points where people were bystanders and had they taken action, justice would have happened sooner. Students need to make those connections between actions and the impact on society. As a teacher, I struggle to help the students make that understanding.

I thoruoghly agree with this, we do have to find the moments of joy that revitalize our strength so that we can continue to do what most of us are called to do. When we are excited about what we do it's easier to get the students excited. Once they are excited they tend to try to step outside of the negative environments that they are accustomed to to do what they can to become better students and grow as people. I am looking forward to reading more of your works.
