Skyscraper: BASED ON A TRUE STORY [seven]

We were on the phone that night--Krista and me. I managed to bring up the Cooper incident, and get the full story out of her.

"I don't even remember how we met him," she said, with a hint of a smile in her voice. "All I remember is me and Jennifer walking up, and Taylor having a new friend. And he was gorgeous." Krista laughed. "He had a skateboard, too, and a little brother that was obsessed with me." I could've imagined her shaking her head. "But his favorite colors were green and black, so I went out and bought the cheapest nail polish because I didn't have green or black." She was probably biting her lip. "Jennifer did it, too. And of course, he noticed it on her. Not me. So they started dating. They kissed in front of me, held hands in front of me... Ha, so much for girl code, right?"

I didn't know what to say, so I let her keep blabbing on about Cooper.

"That's why me and Jenn don't talk anymore, you know. She was always a bitch, but it just took that for me to notice it." She paused, hesitating as if to find good ways to describe the summer. "Around August... you know, the month before my birthday... I heard that he was moving. I tried to find him. I tried contacting him, but he didn't answer. And that was weird because the night before, we were having a full-blown text message conversation. And the next day... this girl Gabby came up to me, and told me that Cooper said bye. 'Cause, you know, he was moving. To Kentucky. For 'school.' And I know I was young, and probably too young to realize how much I was in love with Cooper, but I noticed it two years later and I didn't have a doubt in my mind."

"What do you mean?"

Krista paused and when she spoke, I heard the huge grin on her face. "Being in love... it's something you don't describe or explain, because it's not able to be explained or described."

"How did you know you were in love with Cooper?"

I could imagine her shrugging as she replied, "It was simple, really." She drew a deep, dream-like breath. "From the first time I met him, I knew he was either going to make or break me. And he made me, for the longest time... and then ended up breaking me. But even after he left, even when I was dating someone else, Cooper was the one I wanted to be with all the time. No one else compared to him, because... well, how could they? He was one of a kind. Irreplaceable." Krista laughed a little. "Sure, he was beautiful and talented and funny... but that didn't make me love him. That's not how I knew. I knew because even when my friends dissed him for drinking and smoking and not being good enough, I knew that he was good enough. I didn't care what they thought. They didn't stop me. Even when they warned that he was a mess... I didn't care and I still don't."

Before I could speak, I swallowed hard. "So... you still love him?"

"Presley," she said quietly, "first loves don't go away."
