I generally try to find lures that imitate the local baitfish, so perch, mackerel, cuckoo wrasse, cod, coalfish, herring, that kind of thing. And then choose lighter and brighter in murkier water (such as cuckoo wrasse and herring for example), darker and more camouflage like colours in clear water (leaning more towards perch and coalfish) seems to work quite well for me.
7 : 1 ratio of square PURPLE flakes vs. round RED flakes needs to be in a two tone Tube with a hint of licorice scent....otherwise you won't catch anything ; )
I read an article not too long ago about contrasting bait colours when fishing dirty water, but theres no doubt naturals are a good stand by. Great tip, keep em coming!
