Only 5 of the strings are played with the index finger on the LEFT hand actually, unless you are left handed then it would be your right hand, but from what you stated after i take it that you are right handed. Also the resonator strings are technically played, just as a drone however as the 5 strings are played within whatever raga it is all set to. The left and right hand plays with only the first two fingers too
Only 5 of the strings are played with the index finger of the right hand. The rest are resonator strings, and are not played, except perhaps with the little finger of the right hand at the begining or end of a piece. The left hand plays with only the first and second fingers, and mostly on one string, the rest of the strings played open.
