There are two cylinders per leg used as both muscles and are part of the timing circuit.
There is one more piston that is used only in the timing circuit.
Also, each piston uses two switches, so a total of 9 pistons and 18 switches.

Why does each piston require two switches? Isn't one enough?

I need to know when each piston is expanded and when it is contracted. By hooking switches in series, we can create boolean AND functions (e.g. if front left leg is up *and* back right leg is up, then make all the legs traverse horizontally).
With a single switch you cannot include both fully expanded and fully contracted in AND terms.
