Basically, his immune system was weak because he was a puppy, and it was further compromised by his hunger and tiredness, so his body couldn't suppress his demodex mites (which virtually all dogs are born with). He got demodectic mange, which made his skin very itchy and his hair fall out. He scratched so much that he was swollen and bleeding. He's about one month into his recovery now and doing very well. :)
