In the 1950s, Nepal nationalized millions of hectares of its forest land. It was a disaster -- resulting in decades of mass destruction and degradation. Forced to find a solution, the state finally gave the forests back to the people. Communities throughout the country embarked on a massive project to turn the scrubland back into forests.
