The Subansiri is a major tributary in NE India of the Brahmaputra River. Though significantly shorter than the Siang both rivers have their headwaters in the Tibetan Plateau. Three guest kayakers (Claire, Dave and Lyle) accompanied an Indian team to undertake the first kayaking expedition down the Subansiri since 1994. This video in fact captures some great singing by Vikash from our support raft, as we cross the flats after 5 enchanting days paddling the Subansiri's class 3+ rapids through isolated valleys and past mist enshrouded mountains. Almost the entire stretch we paddled starting from Dumporijo, including 7 or 8 of the biggest and most beautiful rapids in a deeply forested valley set within a vast roadless and unpopulated area, is threatened by a 100m high dam, presently under construction. The reservoir's water will likely lap at Dumporijo the last town before we descended into 2.5 days of isolation on the water.
Drop me a line and I will invite you to my photo gallery from the Siang and Subansiri trips.
