A Corning truck driver hauling plywood from Oregon to Reno July 23 saw smoke coming from one of his trailers as he was traveling south on Highway 89 about three miles south of Highway 299. Jaime Alcala, 52, pulled to the side of the highway and got his wife and two children, ages 4 and 2, away from the big rig just before 11 p.m. Volunteer fire department personnel from Hat Creek and Cassel and the California Department of Forestry (CalFire) firefighters quickly responded. Highway 89 was closed until midnight, then one-way traffic control was implemented.
