Bryn Terfel as Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca.

I miss Spoletta in this performance!

Richard Tucker Gala, 1998.

  • His voice makes my hair stand on end. He sings with such ease.

  • This is a bit restrained the 2011 performance captured more of Scrapia's insanity and lust the LSO also are more appropriately agressive.

  • Wow, what a beauty. Mr. Terfel is indeed a brilliant baritone. By the way who's conducting?

  • Over acted and over sung. I always have this problem with Terfel. He's got SUCH a beautiful voice, and I WANT to love him, but he so often goes overboard, that it makes it hard to truly love his performance.

  • Saw Bryn Terfel as Scarpia in Tosca yesterday (at the cinema). He was absolutely BRILLIANT!

  • The fact that singers like this are included in the same breath as pop 'singers' is disgraceful. Lovely, brilliant, talented singer.

  • Tant de gens aiment le chant ouvert, et la vulgarité? C'est Scarpia d'accord, mais pas le père d'Elisa Doolittle complètement ivre quand même.

  • @TTODD245 I don't agree with your assessment of the tempo-- this piece, like many others, is sometimes performed too fast, in my opinion, because the Scarpia can't sustain the drama or the line in a slower rendition. Clearly, Bryn here is not one of those singers, and the slower tempo really highlights his amazing dramatic and vocal capabilities. The only Scarpia that can compare to his was George Gagnidze in the 2009 Met production (which, unlike the critics, I really liked).
