I play through one of Konami's most notoriously difficult shooters ever made, something that sits just a notch below Gradius III in difficulty if you ask me. This is Trigon, the japan version of Lightning Fighters, main differences being that the "trigon" can be picked up as a secondary orbiting gun unlike in the U.S. version. There are also checkpoints spread few and thin between levels, and you dont have any bombs when you spawn so there are some epic checkpoint fuck traps if you get killed. Even though the game has 2 loops, most players can't even get past the 1st because of the excruciating difficulty.
Powerups are intentionally avoided so rank can be controlled. As you power up more the rank rises and causes enemies to have more health and fire more frequently/faster bullets. Surviving a long time without dying also raises rank, if you get to level 6 with level 2 vulcan/spread, the rank goes apeshit with the planes shooting 2-3 bullets in rapid succession.

good old school game , will try later on mame
btw its funny how bullet count is very few in these games and difficulty comes from big hitbox and slow ship speed
personally I enjoy both styles but can also understand new stg fans thoughts who started playing with espgaluda II or mushihimesama

Yea no kidding, the bullets do come out in mass amounts on stage 8 if you somehow got there without controlling rank though. MamePlayer's video shows how it almost turns into a bullet hell given how large the hitbox is.
