From 28 January 2008 to 15 March 2009, the European Union conducted the military bridging operation EUFOR Tchad/RCA, in accordance with the mandate given by United Nations Security Council Resolution. This operation, deployed in Eastern Chad and in the North East of the Central African Republic, came within the framework of the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP). The operation was conducted with the agreement of the Chadian and Central African governments. In conducting this operation, the EU stepped up its longstanding action in support of efforts to tackle the crisis in Darfur as part of a regional approach to that crisis. The United Nations took over from EUFOR with effect from 15 March 2009 in both Chad and the CAR.
