How was he being a bully? He was invited, "You try" and not once did he strike the child.

better than memoirs of a geisha which was a shithouse movie that wasnt even filmed in japan at all. 70% of japan is mountainous i wished they filmed the last samurai there

@lusonicolusonico ...And defiance in face of defeat is samurai! Like in the end before battle where they all laugh defiantly while say the other side would not surrender. So Algree is really a samurai, his life had no value to him, he searched something meaningfull and not simply "be alive".
That's why he wanted to die in the shooting range when said to the soldier to shoot him, that's why he was drinking himself to death. He was a samurai spirit even before meeting the samurai.

In one hand there is the different aproach to defeat by 2 cultures. For Ujio was good enough to disarm Algreen, for him it would be humiliating enough, but of course Algreen comes from a culture "were there is life there's hope". But there is also Algreen desire to die, so we don't really know what is Algreen up for, is he going at it like "Never give up" or is he going at Ujio like "give all you got, i don't care about shit anymore, i embrace my end fighting" And ...

Hehe, true thing, and very well said ! :D
I think Ujio was seeing a bully pick on a kid and showed what it was like. However, respect was gained when he didn't quit and kept getting up.

You can defeat the body but you can't defeat spirit.
