  • does that mean the subject doesn't need to be right in the centre for AI servo to work properly?

  • No, just the contrary. On the 40D there aren't enough focus sensors around the center one. You must put your subject in one of the sensors to get the AF working. Also, you can see that as soon as the subject leave the sensor, the camera try to focus on the background.

  • For those of you who are confused, it is a 10MP dSLR which is refocusing between each shot as the bird flies away. The point of this was not to make a video, it's not a video camera. The point was to show that the servo mode could maintain focus consistently even at 6FPS, which is a lot for a still camera, especially one that has to flip the mirror up and down between each shot.
