They are pulled from their own time into this virtual reality made by Forever. He wants to experience their emotions so he forces them to search for The Electric Castle and let's them face all sorts of challenges.

Actually all the Ayreon albums are about Forever's race and the end of the Earth. Even The Human Equation is just an experiment by Forever created with The Dream Sequencer from the Universal Migrator albums. And don't even get me started on 01011001 :P

Long story short: A group of people are imprisoned in a sort of dreamworld by the Forever to test their emotions.

They took different kind of people, from different times to 'test' their ability to keep emotions.
