  • A 20th Century gem in a sea of decrepit mediocrity. A relief to the ears.

  • @philosophersphone That's what I'M talkin about!

  • @AlanColeslaw THAT would explain a lot but it would also raise questions. If he studied it for a decent length of time he would've learned to read, learned composition to some degree, and to my mind it would've made his hip-hop work more evolved. Regardless, his natural ear was genius.

  • @cavaleer Dilla studied cello from an early age, if I'm not mistaken.

  • @doncaldeep His songs don't "grow". That's how you can tell. I don't know if you play music but I'm learning the piano and will study composition. I'm already a literary artist- my first book is about a piano genius- and I always expect brilliance from myself. However, yes, he's very talented for anyone but especially for someone who doesn't know music technically, for someone who plays by EAR. Madlib, like Dilla, knows how to create that FEEL with SOUND. Dilla was incredibly gifted this way.

  • @cavaleer ok i get it but then how can you say madlib doesnt know composition? even IF he didn't..... he's a better/more original/more talented/more productive etc. musician than you, me, or most people will ever be. I know as far as the LAST ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC SPACE JAZZ & PERCUSSION goes, he plays every instrument. He raps. He has like 20 aliases. And has made a few modern "classics". I don't care if he can't read music or play piano in the "traditional" style. He makes good music and lots of it

  • @doncaldeep No bro', Hendrix knew music, notes and composition inside out. He didn't read like a trained violinist or pianist. Most Jazz musicians didn't "read" like that. But they knew composition, the structure of music inside and out. The problem is that in the last 20 years cats can make music without being able to play an instrument. This means they often skip that critical immersion into the structure and theory and order of music. Nice try....;-)

  • @doncaldeep That's a mouthful right there, haha but you never know. Hendrix revolutionized MUSIC. If Dilla or Mad studied composition and arrangement on the piano, would they have done something similar?? It's a great question for discussion.
