I think the so-called "sentimentality" at the end is what made me love the movie. The smoking scene is so bitter and hard to watch that it represents the two characters at their absolute worst. If it had ended there, it would have been a bleak and immature portrait of two characters who aren't that two-dimensional. It is a love story, not a story about hard feelings. I thought the ending was perfect cause it captures the two of them coming to peace with the reality of their relationship.
Sometimes life is 'bleak' and god knows people are 'immature'... The final section wasn't 'real' - it was a contrivance to appeal to a broader audience. It could have been Rohmer-esque but merely turned to slush. No truth was revealed, just more cliches. As I said, an opportunity missed.
one of my favorite movies. Its such an honest depiction of how love doesn't always work out how you want it to. Everything from the flawed characters to the seemingly non-sensical dialogue resembles real life in a way most scripted romances can't. Parts can be so unexpected that it has to remind you of those times in life when things just ended up in ways you couldn't possibly have imagined. It is the honest imperfections of the story and characters that make this film so unique and powerful.
It's true but at one single point it starts to get interesting. If any lead acress other than zooey was there probably would have done the same. I am glad I stayed though.
I loved this movie. It was deep, realistic and simple but at the same time it was powerful and touching. The way the actors portrayed their characters was brilliant and the emotion that was shown was like you don't normally see.
