Released in 1996 in Japan and Europe, Keio Flying Squadron 2 is the follow-up to the MegaCD original albeit with a focus on 2D side scrolling platform action as opposed to the horizontal scrolling shooter of the MegaCD title. However the game does tip its hat to the MegaCD game by including the odd shooter level here and there.

You play the part of a small cute female character called Rami and must search for hidden treasure. Along the way you are helped by her pet dragon, Spot. Additionally Rami can carry weapons including a mallet, bow and umbrella to fend off enemies.

The game is unashamedly cute with brightly coloured and detailed graphics. The character animations also look great as would be expected given the Saturn's 2D capabilities. The sound, art style and gameplay to be found in Keio Flying Squadron 2 all make for quite a charming and unique experience.

Nowadays the PAL/European version of Keio Flying Squadron 2 can be quite hard to come and usually goes for quite a bit on eBay. The Japanese version should be easier and cheaper to acquire and is not text heavy which makes it import friendly for non-speakers of the Japanese language.

  • Haha, she kicked those silly old sexist Sumo wrestlers in the face. (Sumo used to be like that back then, it was kinda sexist like most sports) Girl Power!

  • @eternalretrogaming

You certainly don't mess with Rami that's for sure ;-) She's one girl who knows how to handle herself! Thanks for watching ;-)

  • the Saturn had some of the best games, didnt it

  • @izaurralde

Totally agree especially when you look at all the stuff that never made it out of Japan ;-) Well worth picking up a Saturn I'd say. Thank man ;-)

  • cool man!..the original Keio on the MD-CD is one of my prized games..seems the same cool art style is here and almost identical music.Just gotta get past all that platforming fluff eh ;)

  • @cyanidebreathmintz

Hey mate ;-) I'm afraid its mostly platforming fluff that you get here ;-) I initially thought myself that it would have being better if the game remained a shooter like the MegaCD title but the platforming shenanigans really grew on me. Its a great remainder of those classic 16-bit platformers.

  • @TigonVLiger I know, man, like Dragon Force II, Marica, etc. (sniff)

Yeah that music from the underwater level is almost trance inducing ;-) This is one of the better PAL titles for sure and it seems that it wasn't westernised in any way at all which makes it quite unique. Only downer is that it can be pretty expensive on eBay nowadays :-( Thanks mate

  • Like the look of this one, Trevor - very quirky, nice colourful graphics and love how it switches from platformer to shoot em'up with a bit of driving and almost beat em' up style action in the process! Really like the atmospheric music from the swimming/diving section too :)

  • @ash81b4u

Thanks Ash ;-) Not heard of Lomax so will check that out. Keio 2 is a pretty decent game all round. Surprised it was picked up for a Western release at all.
