Last week marked the one-year anniversary for James Van Eyll as chief of the Long Lake Fire Department.
While this might not seem like that big of a deal to some of you - you must keep in mind that Van Eyll is the first full-time chief in the department's long history.
At the March 17 Long Lake City Council meeting, Van Eyll received a positive job review, just as he had at previous times throughout the year. Long Lake council members and staff have not been shy about heaping praise on Van Eyll.
What I was more interested in was finding out how someone representing Orono - a contract city of the Long Lake Fire Department - views the job done by Van Eyll so far.
I spoke last week with Orono Councilmember Jim Murphy, who said he has been very pleased on all levels, including as a citizen of the service area, as a council member of a contract city and as a member of the fire advisory committee.
"I've been overwhelmingly pleased at what James has undertaken and what he's already begun accomplishing," Murphy said. "And it's not only what he's done, but how he's going about it."

Youth Art Month at Orono Schools
Orono Schools is celebrating Youth Art Month - March - with a traveling art show that has already gone from he Media Center of Schumann Elementary/Orono Intermediate School to Orono Middle School, where it will remain through Friday, April 3.
But just because the month is done that doesn't mean the display will follow suit. The display will move next week to Orono High School where it will remain until April 17.
Parents and other community members are welcome to view the display during regular school hours.
This video preview can be viewed in its entirety on the district's website - www.orono.k12.mn.us.
