The guys over at ladyada (dot) net dismantled an iPhone charger so they could make their Mintyboost (a battery-powered USB charger) work with some iPhones. Turns out you have to have a voltage applied to the data pins, and also that the specific voltage effects how much current the iPhone will draw. I think they got the Mintyboost to work with iPhone 3G. You should check out the site :)

@spedknot usb 3.0 has 8 wires instead of 4 like usb 2.0 You can see the 4 metal prongs and 4 more metal prongs behind the front ones when you look inside of the usb 3.0 cable.

I think I know why the charge is stay around 6V. The LED clamped the voltage to no more than 7V. The LED acts as shunt when it is forward conducting.

I have the same charger and I solved the problem with iphone and ipod charging a very funny way. I simply charge an external battery with the dynamo and an external battery charges an iphone.

@jamesgraysonn because it is giving out 6 volts, your supposed to have 5 with usb.
