The Easter Rising (Irish: Éirí Amach na Cásca), was an insurrection staged in Ireland during Easter Week, 1916. The Rising was mounted by Irish republicans with the aims of ending British rule in Ireland and establishing an Irish Republic. It was the most significant uprising in Ireland since the rebellion of 1798.

Organised by the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, the Rising lasted from Easter Monday 24 April to 30 April 1916. Members of the Irish Volunteers, led by schoolteacher and barrister Patrick Pearse, joined by the smaller Irish Citizen Army of James Connolly, along with 200 members of Cumann na mBan, seized key locations in Dublin and proclaimed an Irish Republic independent of Britain. There were some actions in other parts of Ireland but, except for the attack on the RIC barracks at Ashbourne, County Meath, they were minor.

The Rising was suppressed after seven days of fighting, and its leaders were court-martialled and executed, but it succeeded in bringing physical force republicanism back to the forefront of Irish politics. In the 1918 General Election, the last all-island election held in Ireland, to the British Parliament, Republicans won 73 seats out of 105, on a policy of abstentionism from Westminster and Irish independence. This came less than two years after the Rising. In January 1919, the elected members of Sinn Féin who were not still in prison at the time, including survivors of the Rising, convened the First Dáil and established the Irish Republic. The British Government refused to accept the legitimacy of the newly declared nation, leading to the Irish War of Independence.

  • This room at the moment has become a mud-slinging match. Please excuse the comments of those both for and against Irish nationalism. I heard a quote a few weeks ago during the queen's visit to Ireland. "the English would like the Irish a bit more if they knew more about Irish history and the Irish would like the English a bit more if we knew less about our history. We cant un-learn our history so I suggest that the Brits here read Irish history 1200-2000 up on Wikipedia. Then you can comment.

  • the hatred for the irish army held by youtube nationalists annoys me. they source their hatred or atleast discontent towards the DF from the actions of the irish free state army in the civil war. the people wearing uniform in this video, and every other 'irish army' video, bar the ones from the civil war, are not the free state army. they are the irish defences forces. founded in 1923, one year after the civil wars end. if you MUST post comments with hatred atleast read a history book first.

  • @mad4thecraic Its very rare to find people who hate who also are smart enough to have a good education in history.

  • @spinlessbastard1 I don't think you are a spineless bastard, you are able to make your opinions known to other people with less regard to thier own feelings. This might be because you want to prove to the world you are not a spineless bastard but you dont have to do it that way. Have more respect for yourself. If you believe in yourself and you know what you want you can achieve anything.

  • HOW DARE ,THESE ,...forelock tugging ,free state ARSE LICKER cowardly scumbags ,take it upon themselves to commemorate ,anything ,they have spent there whole lives collaborating ,with the British, and attacking there fellow Irish men and women ,there attitude to the north has always been " IM ALLRIGHT JACK FUCK YOU"

  • @spinlessbastard1 I understand that while your opinions are hartfelt they are not really relevant to this discussion.

  • @WestBritWatch Everybody wanted the Republic... nobody was fighting against it. Two sides had different ways of acheiving it. Pro-treaty side wanted to accept the Dominion and use the government to achieve the Republic (freedom to achieve freedom as Michael Collins put it). The anti-treaty side wanted the war of independence to continue which they didn't have a hope in hell of winning. The Republic was achieved afterwards by the pro-treaty method of using our own government.

  • @WestBritWatch When Britain called a truce in the war of independence they offered a dominion. It was accepted by new Irish government and they said they'll use the new government to get a Republic.

The IRA wanted to continue fighting for a Republic but the Irish government wanted to remove the gun from Irish politics and achieve the Republic their own way and that's why they put the Irish Army at war with the IRA. As far as the new government was concerned the war with Britain was over.

  • @gloin10 No he is right all the presidents are related in some way to the monarchy. Except for Obama he's Indonesian

  • Jameson10314, do please study some history, and stay away from the crazy conspiracy theory sites.

Obama related to the Windsor family? Eh, how does that work? And this proves the British control everything? Jesus Dog man, what are you smoking?

  • @phillyballybay I was sympathizing with the fact that even here in the US the crown and their wealthy cohorts control everything. Except for JFK almost all of our presidents have royal blood including Obama. From what I heard Ireland is being subjected to harsh Austerity measures.

That's just another expression to destroy the middle class. No country can ever be free of the international bankers.

  • @Jameson10314 youre quessing padraic pearse...what do you mean by that ? we have a free state now dont we ? mother england get away with that ...we were forced to learn the saxon language and our language was banned and our relegion banned ...but irish language still lives today so who do think you are being an american to judge the hero of our nation ..how dare you sir !

  • @derrinirl Was it not he New Irish Government brought back the Gun into Politics Look at the Shelling ofThe Four Courts with the loss of scores of civilian lives as me many of those british supplied 18 Pounder shells missed their target, Moreover many Volunteers swore an Oath to the ideal of free and soveriegn state of 'The Irish Republic' as later ratified by the 'First Dail'. so some wouldn't compromise while outher would allow outhers to be locked into a brutal racist sectarian statelet,

  • 6 counties ? does Ireland abandon the people who fought for, and desire their right for the Republic ?

  • @spacemooseireland unfortunately true
