One of the more popular Research & Development projects AAA worked on was the Man Pick-up. It was very useful during WWII for getting spies in and out of enemy territory. The system was later modified for the jungles of Southeast Asia. This video clip was from the R&D tests during the1950's (Grumman Goose piloted by Capt Norman Rintoul). The first Man Pick-up occured in 1942 by Rintoul in the AAA Stinson SR-10.
The first man pick-up was at Wright Field on September 5, 1943. Lt Alexis Doster, A Paratrooper volunteered. The Pilot was Norman Rintoul. Rintoul swept down and snagged him in his Stinson at 125MPH. Rintoul is also piloting the aircraft in this video clip.

Believe this system was invented by Robert Fulton 3rd, grandson of the steamboat inventor. It works.

The aircraft featured in the video is not a Grumman Goose, but rather its bigger sibling, the Grumman Albatross. Impressive video, by the way.

Hey Bill, me and the boys were thinking, and we think It'd be a great idea if we tie you to a balloon and have a fast flying aircraft ram into it, fling you in the air like a pinyata stuck on a bullet train. So, yeah, get your helmet on.

They originally developed this system for rural air mail service, with a big rubberized container in place of this hapless guy. I can't help giggling at this video, though.
