Animation of the Jupiter Europa Orbiter's Four Io Flybys

This is an animation shows the four baseline flybys of Jupiter's moon Io by the Jupiter Europa Orbiter. Currently scheduled to launch in 2020, the spacecraft would reach Jupiter in December 2025, with an Io flyby prior to going into orbit. JEO would perform three more Io flybys in 2026 before its goes into orbit around the neighboring moon, Europa, in 2028.

The current baseline trajectory is subject to change with 10 years before the spacecraft even launches, and a number of factors such as changes in the launch date or changes to the baseline mission will change the timing and trajectory of each Io encounter.

Because there is no 3D model available for JEO for Celestia, I had to use a model of Cassini as a substitute. If one does become available, I may be able to upload an updated version with the correct model.

No it's not. It is something I created based on the USGS basemap, thermal emission data from Galileo, and tables listing the hotspots seen by Galileo. I can make it available on the Celestia forum today if I have time.

Thanks, Jason! I think your homemade video is the first visualization I've seen of the mission. Love the lava flow texture on the nightside (I only have the Ionian aurorae texture) -- is it on the Motherlode?
