R.I.P. Michael Shenker, NYC / East Village housing and human rights activist, community garden promoter, musician, artist, organizer...This is from the memorial procession through the streets of the East Village which included stops with history and memories from fellow activists at some of the various locations where Michael had made an impact. In New Orleans honorary tradition, a drum and brass band helped lead the way and keep spirits up, along with a flying bird puppet. The band also played one of Michael's original songs at a streetside altar, bringing the crowd to tears. This scene is from a community garden which had been seized and barricaded by a newer high rise which claimed eminent domain over the garden, which features beautiful sculpture and murals; miraculously, the procession found the gates to be unlocked, allowing the participants to clean up and plant seeds in the garden despite the efforts of a flabbergasted security guard trying to physically remove the peaceful celebrants.
