At the British Museum in London, from the 13th September 2007 to 6th April 2008, The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army exhibition celebrates the life of Ying Zheng (260BC-210BC), China's first emperor. Peasants digging a well came upon the terracotta army in four pits at Xi'an in the central province of Shaanxi in 1974. Ying Zheng, who ascended the throne aged 13 and is buried in a flat-topped pyramid tomb nearby, had wanted to take a replica of his real army into the afterlife with him- footsoldiers, archers, cavalrymen and officers of all ranks. The discovery in 1998 of another pit containing terracotta acrobats, musicians and bureaucrats made archaeologists realise that the emperor wanted his entire court with him in the afterlife.
His tomb, which has never been excavated, is said to represent the Universe.
