As I stood in the music store on a hot summer's day choosing music for the Grotto Carolers, I suddenly stopped and lost all sense of time and space when I held this music in my hand. Here was a gorgeous interpretation of a stark Russian winter based on a 16th century Russian Carol. The only problem was it wasn't a capella. Could it be done? I was bound and determined that we would sing this Carol... and you can hear the beautiful results. Performed by the Grotto Carols on their Opening Night Concert, Nov 27th, 2009 in Portland, OR under the direction of Julie Stewart.
ps - I had to look up what "fur robed Moujiks" meant - a moujik is a russian peasant under the Tsar. I love the image of shaggy ponies and shaggy oxen in snow bound mountains and snow bound valleys.... (Note - I contacted NYC ASCAP Web Licensing and they said I could post our concert on Facebook and You-Tube.)
I LOVE this!!!! This reminds me of Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed.
