Yes, Morna777, there are smaller, portable mechanical respirators (we call them ventilators now). The lady you mentioned was not fully informed about alternatives to an iron lung. I had polio in 1953 and spent six months in an iron lung. When my pulmonary capacity declined again, because of post-polio syndrome, I decided to get a tracheostomy, the procedure you describe as "cutting her throat open." I have never had a problem with this. I remain active in my community.
@nikerocks7 please remember that these people are already completely paralyzed by polio. They are quadriplegics. Mechanical respirators, like the one Christopher Reeve used, are available. However one polio survivor decided she'd rather stay in the iron lung than use one, since it didn't require monitoring by a skilled nurse and didn't require cutting her throat open to insert a tube.
Like, folks walking around in iron lungs would be so reminiscent of that wonderful character in the "Felix the Cat" cartoons. With such a development, cripples will be able to ambulate in character as The Master Cylinder. Despite the novelty, so sad, babes!
