Diatoms, are an algae group,
dia in Greek means to cut through,
they've been around before me and you,
and prove that the smallest can survive too!

Look real close, and you will behold,
new worlds inside a microscope.
This story begins within the oceans,
where resides a type of phytoplankton.
Diatoms, they are a small algae,
whose little lives are quite astounding.
And it's ok if you don't get it yet,
the words that we use are a bit complex.

These organisms are very, very small,
and are surrounded by a silica wall.
The cell itself consists of two halves,
while the wall holds ribs, pores, even a back!
Diatoms two types, the first Pennates,
just think pen; they have a thin-shape.
The other is Centric, circular centers,
Centric, circular, now you remember!

Diatoms, are an algae group,
dia in greek means to cut through,
they've been around before me and you,
and prove that the smallest can survive too!

Since the Jurassic they've been around,
in numerous fossils many were found.
As evidence when extinction dawned,
they diversified, evolved and held on.
Sticking together, they form a colony,
today they help measure water quality.
Keeping the balance they remain,
critical producers in the food chain.

Tiny, small, bifurcation,
unicellular, most basic.
Algae, phytoplankton, cell,
colonies, a place to dwell.
Home is oceans, water, Earth is,
best when wet so they can flourish.
Diatoms, they are a small algae,
whose little lives are quite astounding.

and prove that the smallest can survive too!

  • actually, 'dia' means 'through' and 'tom' means 'cut' as in 'anatomy' - 'to cut up'

  • @myriadeyes. You are correct, sir. Sorry if I took a few liberties there with the meaning. I admit, without a research team to fact check me, my human side tends to show through. Thanks for watching!
