@Jezzibrum Agreed however I think that shapers will become fewer and fewer because of the CNC and tracer trype shaping machines. Now in the big production companies all they need are sanders and glassers. Perhaps some free hand graphics as well. There will be custom shapers around but as the need for hand shaping falls so will the need for apprentices. I was also wondering if he was going to uses templates and towards the end he did. This will insure that some performance and not just "a log".
Yeah but I was just telling him the price. Plus the shapers who have years of experience mostly learned that the hard way, self taught trial and error. There were no big shaping companies back then to take on apprentice's. Does not necessarily require professional training, more so a grasp on hydrodynamics and knowledge of what shape gets what result.
Not only that, but there are so many factors to consider when shaping a board. Without professional training, you'd never get a properly shaped board. Anything you created would just be a big stick that floats.
Have Buzz shape one for you in the quonset hut on Olema-Bolinas Rd...

that's not true. making a great board might be hard, but making an OK one is pretty straightforward.
just a little bit of rocker, boxy rails, and no concaves might not make a high performance machine but it'll ride just fine.
