Saturday 17th of May.
Early afternoon a supercell developed just NW of Marburg followed by a HUGE squall line of thunderstorms that extended over 200km's from north to south.
An intense cold pool was approaching the northern tablelands of NSW and was subsequently sending off waves of instability up over the Darling Downs and SE QLD.
LI's of near -6 and -7 with CAPE up near the 1500 mark.. unbelievable shear at all levels (although linear) and temps near -20C at 500mb highlighted a serious risk for severe weather from early to late afternoon.
This system definitely didn't fail to produce! In the end, the cold pool shot off 3 waves which rapidly developed into strong/severe lines of thunderstorms with numerous microbursts some of which were travelling over 80km/h!
Some small hail, microbursts, wind damage and very heavy short duration rainfall and frequent lightning was widespread with this storm system.
This all developed ahead of a vigorous westerly / wintery wind change which dumped the first snow in some areas of the NSW Tablelands.. and produced wind gusts of near 100km/h behind the change.
Winter has arrived.
