I know why the military classified that information. It was because they never identified those objects and because it happened during the height of the cold war. They classified that information because the incident was an embarrassment and a demonstration of potential military weakness. They classified that information because they didn't know what had happened and they sure as hell didn't want the public to know they didn't know. They wanted to maintain the illusion of omniscience.
