Thomas Cole’s Western view of the Voyage of Life that he defined as child, youth, manhood, and old age reminds me of the Eastern Buddhist view of 4 Stages of Life characterized by birth, aging, sickness, and death.

Very nice...beautiful paintings. We should all hold onto our child self, but also mature to man/womanhood, to face the reality and sorrow, and change things for the better...unfortunately most don't. They hold onto the worst part of childhood: selfish conformity, and lose the best part: selfless wonderment and sentimentality. And they're too preoccupied with their social customs to focus on what needs changing.
