I have been asked many times to do a better video of my Eheim filters so here it is, sorry it has taken so long.

The Eheim filters are filtering two tanks, 1x 5ft and 1x 2ft both are 2ft deep and 2 1/2ft high they are joined by filters and the white PVC tubing you see between them at the top. If you have any questions or suggestions of improvement please leave comments or contact me.

  • The tank looks great. I have a couple of q's.

    1. Was it difficult to plumb the 2180 filter to the bottom of the tank?

    2. Is it quiet?

    3. Do you believe the 2180 is standing up well with the head pressure from being bottom plumbed?

    4. The 2180 comes with 2 intake lines. Where did you locate yours?

I'm in the process of designing/upgrading to a 300 gallon cichlid tank. I would prefer to have 2 2180/thermo canister filters with the same set-up as your tank. Sorry about all the q's. Thanks

  • Hi @Jaloth3, many thanks for your questions.

I drilled two holes in the bottom of the tank when I got it.

The return water is comming in from the top and the head pressure is helped by the weight/force of the tank water into the filter from below rather than being pulled over the top of the tank rim then down. I would like to offer you more info because it took me a few months to get this correct, but now it's nearly no maintanance at all. Please contact me if you would like my advice and help.

  • hi there. i have the eheim 2217 for my turtle. the turtle is very dirty and produces tones of waste but its not sensitive like a goalfish and the water doesnt need to have all the right values. do you think that i should take out some of the bio media and put more mechanical in because of this? thank you

  • Hi @Tibialmario. The Eheim 2217 is a very good choice of filter for doing exactly what your asking.

I would suggest you do a 1/2 bio media and 1/2 mechanical media. For the 1/2 mechanical media above the bio media stack 3 different types of foam from very course to fine then the last layer would be a white filter wool.

This is the same way I have set up my 2217 you see in the video and it does a great job of keeping the water clean from floating partials.

Thanks for viewing and your question.

  • Hi @VeryBadReputation. IF you are looking at using the 2217 for biological filtration and you have a second filtration system doing some mechanical filtering then there is no problem of filling the 2217 full with bio media only. The Eheim 2217 can hold 6.6 litres of media so at the moment mine has 3 litres of bio media at the bottom and 3 litres of mechanical media on top. Hope this helps and if you need any more info please get back to me. Cheers.

  • @9364peter Thanks for the reply. I'm mostly looking for a second filter only for biological filtration. So, you have it filled to the middle with bio-media, how many liters you think is in there now?

  • @9364peter hi there thanks for the reply and the information. brilliant i will do that!

  • Hi @VeryBadReputation. One of the good things about the Eheim 2217 is that you can fill/stack it with the media that suits your filtering requirements. Eg: In my video the 2217 has only 1/2 biological media and the other 1/2 is fine mechanical media because the water runs through a UVC before retuning to the tank. The other Eheim filter (2180) is full of all biological media so it doesn’t really do much fine mechanical filtering at all. If this doesn't answer your question please contact me.

  • How much biological media (lt) can you fit in the 2217?
