Yeah, riiight. The driver got arrested. Roads are for vehicles and a bicycle is a vehicle under the law. Even if that were not the case, a motorist can't just run it off the road without facing arrest and potentially jail time.

I live right down the street from where this happened. They had just crossed Eastern Avenue into the District. The driver was most likely a Marylander.

hasn't the driver committed an offense by failing to stop after a collision? in australia at least that's a serious offence, often with jail time, regardless of whose fault the collision was.

No. Actually, he was wrong. The lane was too narrow for a bicycle and a car and there was a risk of a door opening from the parked car. Those things mean that it is unsafe to keep far right which means that he has a legal right to ride in the middle of the lane where it is safer. The driver was also wrong about it being OK to assault a bicyclist with a car. BTW, the driver was a retired DC cop. He got a plea bargain and plead guilty.
