Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)

Lyrics/Music: Jim Croce

Operator, oh could you help me place this call
You see the number on the matchbook is old and faded
She's livin' in L.A.
With my best old ex-friend Ray
A guy she said she knew well 'n' sometimes hated

Isn't that the way they say it goes
But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

Operator, oh could you help me place this call
'Cause I can't read the number that you just gave me
There's something in my eyes
You know it happens every time
I think about the love that I thought would save me

Isn't that the way they say it goes
But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

No, no, no, no, that's not the way it feels

Operator, oh let's forget about this call
There's no one there I really wanted to talk to
Thank you for your time
Oh you've been so much more than kind
And you can keep the dime

Isn't that the way they say it goes
But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine and to show
I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

  • @yukons95 , Obviously your mind is not that open, using derogatory words, Dude. Peace Out !!

  • @yukons95 Why in every video is there an idiot that mentions that name?

  • why do these geniouses always have a dude in glasses accompaning them on guitar and making the song 300% better!

  • yall all are right back then they not only knew how to make things right but the music back then any one could listin to n not worry bout hearing cussing or sexual remarks it was good clean music with a story behind it

  • I saw him in Chicago weeks before the crash. I was not a fan at the time, friends talked me into the show. He was fantastic! So glad I went,

  • @yukons95

Not possible, Justin doesn't even write his own music. Will others still be listening to his music 35 years later? NO WAY!

  • god a guy who could sing and not look like a freakin mannequin..now we get these manifactured children. I miss real singers. RIP Jim we miss you

  • I heard he wrote this song while at Ft. Jackson, SC. He saw the soldiers waiting in line to call home from basic training and this is what inspired him to write this song....That's what is heard

  • dude was incredible.

  • What a beautifully written and performed song. A perfect balance of sadness and sweetness. Jim Croce was an awesome songwriter, and Maury Muehleisen was an exceptional arranger. May they both rest in peace.
