I heard he wrote this song while at Ft. Jackson, SC. He saw the soldiers waiting in line to call home from basic training and this is what inspired him to write this song....That's what is heard

What a beautifully written and performed song. A perfect balance of sadness and sweetness. Jim Croce was an awesome songwriter, and Maury Muehleisen was an exceptional arranger. May they both rest in peace.
