IMPORTANT NOTE (READ THIS FIRST):

Youtube has just started hard- limiting audio in newly uploaded videos -- this makes my nice mastered audio sound HORRIBLE. Until they fix their stuff, this video is available at http://www.vimeo.com/1420598 -- please watch it there and feel free to comment here.

Kwakfest: virt - The_Fighting_Illini_Become_Huge_Ninja_Robots_and_Take_the_Championship.mid

Kwakfest is a "speed composing party" my friends and I have now and then, to hone our musical skills and (more importantly) laugh like idiots when we all listen to the results. I'm making an album featuring four years of my Kwakfest entries recorded on high-quality synths.

This was written in a manic frenzy after I'd had a successful first interview with the company I now work for (which is located near the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, whose sports team is "The Illini".)

Following the theme is always optional in a Kwakfest, but how could you pass up one that good?

Special thanks to YouTube user hattariyaro, who has done some amazing "MIDI animations" with the same visualizer I used here.

  • awsome... very castlevania-ish

  • Hah, you want castlevania-ish, check out DRACULA MAN X2 ALPHA TURBO (which combines castlevania with megaman x) -- it will be on the upcoming album, and is out there for free if you google around.

(btw: saying "sounds like castlevania" gets you kicked out of the kwakfest chatroom, so I intentionally made something sounding like castlevania, it was VERY awesome watching people squirm around trying to avoid saying it)

  • Brilliant. Aside from the various movements of the composition, the "talking" feel of the announcer and the sound effects really make this rendered MIDI shine...and it's quite funny, too! Great work.
