Mental Health Practice editor Colin Parish interviews Louis Appleby and Calum Meiklejohn about the future of mental health care in the criminal justice system.

Louis Appleby is National Clinical Director for Health and Criminal Justice and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manchester.

Calum Meiklejohn, a registered mental nurse who has worked in prison mental health units since 1998, is the former chair of the RCN Nursing in Criminal Justice Services Forum. His MSc research was on remand prisons, looking at the attitudes and beliefs of prison staff towards mentally ill prisoners. In 2005 he was involved in developing mental health services in the prisons and courts in the South West of England, and in 2009 he won the coveted Nursing Standard award for nursing innovation in criminal justice settings.
