A conversation with Elizabeth Mendez Berry, who wrote the well-known Vibe magazine feature "Love Hurts" about domestic violence within (and without) hip-hop:
http://www.thefreeradical.ca/Love_Hurts_VIBE.pdf

UPDATE: Elizabeth wrote to clarify that she misspoke at the end when she said it's the leading cause for all women 15-45, and she sent over more info about where she got the statistics referenced in the video, see below.

-----------------
"Intimate partner violence is the leading cause of death for
African-American women ages 15 to 45 and the seventh leading cause of premature death for U.S. women overall." SOURCE: National Institute of Justice (division of the Bureau of Justice), http:// www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/jr000250e.pdf

MORE INFO:

Intimate partner deaths have decreased most dramatically among black men. From 1976-1985, black men were more likely than black women to be a victim of domestic homicide; by 2005, black women were three times more likely than a black male to be murdered by their partners. SOURCE: Bureau of Justice http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/intimates.htm

Black women make up 8% of the U.S. population but in 2005 accounted for 42% of all female victims of intimate partner homicide. SOURCE: Bureau of Justice: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/intimates.htm

The rate of death by intimate partner homicide for black women is about three times the rate of death by intimate partner homicide for white women. SOURCE, Bureau of Justice: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/tables/intgreltab.htm

The bigger picture around the Chris Brown and Rihanna story. Because for every Rihanna and Chris Brown there are millions of everyday people trapped in a cycle of violence that won't make the headlines.

  • Did she just say the leading cause of death of African American women between the age of 15 and 45 is intimate partner violence?

ehhhh I'm not sure If I totally agree with that. that statistic seems a bit off....I could be wrong though..but that is just my opinion

  • @IncredibleStan please check the "more info" box on the top right, this was addressed there.

  • If someone is attacking you and you have to use force to stop them, that is self defense. There is a term, 'stop the threat'. Meaning you ONLY use whatever force necessary to stop the other person from harming you.

Self defense is not trying to prove that you are bigger and stronger. It's not trying to teach the other person a lesson.

Anyone who is taught real self-defense knows that the object of self defense is to get away from the attacker.

  • I can't believe some people are even having this conversation.

Men, I'll give you the same simple advice I give women. The FIRST time your woman hits you, call the police and then pack your shit and leave her.

No one deserves abuse of any kind.

We are humans not monkeys and we've evolved far enough that we have many other ways to respond to violence.

Quit making excuses and stop acting like you were raised by wolves.

  • how did you edit this??? please tell me, u did an awesome job.

  • are there any new videos from this channel? i really like the stuff on here

  • great point about the physical differences between men and women being used to show how ridiculous the whole "revenge" rationalization is. especially with the lisa rios situation, big pun having been 700 lbs.

  • @jackedup2077

easy advice to say but the reality is if your a man who phones the police to report dv against you guess who gets arressed when they arrive, heres a clue for you it aint the women.

  • This is a damn good video.

  • I not a advocate of abusing women at all however women must be responsible for their own actiosn if your willing to hurt someone physically don't be surprise by the response. Simple logic. Or try this one "Do under to others as you want them to do unto you"

  • i would of rather heard you talk about this issue... this is totally biased, guys who hit women are totally wrong, we cant stop guys from hitting women the only one who can stop it is the women themselves by not empowering them to do it by staying with them. its a frustrating topic cause its like someone going to mcdonalds for a couple months or years without a problem then going there and getting food poisoning then trying again and getting sick... well guess what stop going

  • @IncredibleStan It's not "a little bit off" - it's an outright invention / anti-male propaganda... it's downright scary that yes, our Attorney General Eric Holder did in fact say it. The Dept of Justice website has the actual numbers - the leading causes of death for African-American women between the ages 15–45 are cancer, heart disease, unintentional injuries such as car accidents, and HIV disease. Homicide comes in fifth — and includes murders by strangers.

    SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER!

  • @gamervivek I would have to look into that a bit closer. i agree it doesn't seem very likely the LEADING cause of death among female would be homicide.

Either way I wasn't arguing for that. I was arguing against some idiot who was claiming that women murder men at the same rate as men murder women. Which isn't true. And no link in the world will convince me otherwise.
