Greywater is household wastewater from kitchen sinks and bathroom tubs - anything except for raw sewage. In many countries in the Middle East and North African region, untreated greywater is used for irrigation purposes due to the environmentally andpolitically determined water scarcity of the region, and is stored in privately constructed holding tanks. Along with risks to human health in the holding and reuse of this water forirrigation, the hiring of private parties to regularly empty these tanks is a cost burden onhouseholds, as public infrastructure is not always available to do so, especially in rural areas. The safe treatment of this water can provide an alternative to other costly andsources of irrigation. But how can this water be treated in a cost effective andsimple way for households to own and utilize? This short film documents the catalyst, innovation, implementation and outcome of onesolution, initially developed in the West bank and now adopted for use in Jordan and Lebanon.

  • palestine isnt only desert

  • They should not be flushing a toilet at all as is is a major waste of water. Human waste can be composted and enriches the soil instead of polluting water. Goggle Joseph Jenkins humanure handbook.

  • could these people be said to be average palestinians in regards to their wealth? i always thought that palestinians were often poorer than these, and if so what is the solution for them? the way they use their tap water seems a bit wasteful for people living in a desert..

  • reduce runoff, increase infiltration...also, if you minimize waste, you minimize consumption!!! this solution is highly rational and will be or already is the norm for water-poor societies globally.

  • This is deeply unfortunate that these people are driven to such extent. It wouldn't be so bad if they could use ground water because the ground is where mother nature stores the water. Reduce runoff, increase infiltration. This biological solution is brilliant.

  • you might want to check out my site "carlgordonhedman" where I demonstrate a device that flushes a toilet with bathwater from adjoining tub.

  • this stuff is amazing- i'm working on research right now to use a phytoremediating plant to produce starch for ethanol synthesis- hard to get funding b/c people want corn to use- WHY BURN OUR FOOD!?

  • this is a good project
