Author Dmitry Orlov criticizes the U.S. government's response to the economic crisis, arguing that current popular economic models are not equipped to deal with the problem. Orlov explains his worst-case scenario: that if current trends continue, the U.S. may collapse, ending up as "a defunct nation composed of many wretched little feifdoms."

-----

With vintage Russian black humor, Dmitry Orlov describes the social collapse he witnessed in Russia in the 1990s and spells out its practical lessons for the American social collapse he sees as inevitable.

The American economy in the 1990s described itself as "Goldilocks" - just the right size - when in fact is was "Tinkerbelle," and one day the clapping stops.

As in Russia, the US made itself vulnerable to the decline of crude oil, a trade deficit, military over-reach, and financial over-reach. -- The Long Now Foundation

Dmitry Orlov is an engineer and a writer on subjects related to Peak Oil. He was born in Leningrad and moved to the United States at the age of 12. Orlov was an eyewitness to the collapse of the Soviet Union over several extended visits to his Russian homeland between the late 1980s and mid-1990s. He has a BS in Computer Engineering and an MA in Applied Linguistics. His latest book is Reinventing Collapse (June 2008). His article Closing the Collapse Gap compares the collapse-preparedness of the USA and the USSR.

  • Here in Britain, only yesterday I saw a local car dealership and a metal fabrication shop close up. Their signs were pulled down and all the cars were gone.

Last month I bought a gold sovereign coin, and I've started hoarding pasta, rice, flour and long lasting food.

I don't want to alarm my wife so she doesn't know.

A wise man would prepare, because no government is going to warn you when it all goes pear shaped.

  • You are far out of touch with reality. The Rusians never just laid down to die. The Great Patriotic War in which the Russians lost some 10-20 million people defeating the Nazi war machine is proof of their tenacity. Dmitry has no agenda and has no reason to stick up for his former homeland. This arrogant attitude is all the more proof that america will crash, and crash hard. Dmitry merely lays out the facts and has no agenda and leaves it up to the reader to draw their own conclusions

  • Russians have been predicting doom for the US for decades. It never happens.

  • @deeeEeEEEeEee33eem just start stocking up your own personal food supply and hide it .. no reason you can't prepare .. just don't tell anyone, they won't listen anyway

  • @stuntpea the only major problem of hoarding foods and supplies (and especially in the US) is that 40,000,000 are beyond poor and are already on food stamps...desperate people will do desperate things including stealing and commiting murder to feed their families ....also if you've got no gas how much food are you capable of carrying really?

  • The Babylonian economy will fall. Babylon is America.

  • Man as a kid....i live with fuckin naysayers. I wish I cud prepare but I live with fucks who sit there and watch sports, sitcoms, Jersey Shore and just plain sick fucks

  • Wats dis? No Russian accent?

  • the biggest problem is that so very few ppl have a clue about whats ahead. They will be in total shock and probably incapacitated with fear and bewilderment. Mass death by starvation and civil wars are most likely what will ensue. Living with millions of tons of dead flesh will make your happiest neighbor a few million families of rats. Get out of the city ASAP.

  • @ZwolfZki lol. you've waited a while.

  • I got into this kind of thing just after Mad Max 2 first came out. I really hope the collapse comes soon.
